Finding my voice

    Hi, guys.

I've been playing instruments for over 10 years but I'm new to singing.

I'm struggling to find my voice because I tend to copy other artists when singing along to songs, so I was looking for some advice.

How did you all find your voice without copying other artists and how did you become comfortable with it?

    Thank you.

    Hi, Regina!

In my experience, copying other artists is an important part of that process. Eventually you'll find a sound that feels comfortable, doesn't take a ton of effort to produce, and has bits of the artists who influenced you along the way.

I am still in the copying process- i have been told that it is a right of passage and once one is comfy doing that - one will discover ways to find one's own voice. I keep reminding myself, however, the dea is not to do it exactly like that but immerse in the essence of the voice of a singer i admire

Great tip! A voice teacher I love says to "sing like, not sound like", so you employ a singer's technique and style without the pressure of sounding exactly like them, since you have a unique instrument yourself.
